We're bringing Rhythmic Uprising home again to Ohio (Home of Director Ben Watkins). This time we have the honor of screening our film in the state capital at The King Arts Complex. The screening will open with a performance from local Capoeira Angola group TABCAT Columbus. We will be present after the screening to join local arts leaders in a dialog about the role of African arts in our midwest lives.

Braziladelphia, Alex Shaw, Media Bureau Network Studios and the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival present a special night featuring a screening of the celebrated documentary Rhythmic Uprising. The film shows how vibrant Afro-Brazilian arts are used to combat racism and social inequality in Bahia, Brazil.

Philadelphia-based International Capoeira Angola Foundation will give a demo to begin the evening. Following the film, the filmmakers will join a panel of local cultural arts leaders to discuss youth, identity, and the arts. Stick around till the end as Philly's own Alô Brasil busts out the drums. Akron Film Festival

Ben is wildly excited for Rhythmic Uprising to be screened at the Akron Film Festival. Ben is a NE Ohio native and this will be the first time he's been able to formally share what he learned in Brazil with the folks back home. There won't be an official Q&A at the screening, but we're working on holding that or a panel discussion about the arts and racial identity somewhere nearby.

Africa World Doc Film Festival

The Africa World Documentary Film Festival sees documentary filmmaking as having a special role to play in capturing and representing the lives and cultures of the people of Africa and of African descent worldwide. In Barbados they are presenting Rhythmic Uprising among 25 films set in South Africa, Cuba, Brazil, jamaica, Senegal, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Santo Domingo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Kenya, St. Croix, Mali, Ivory Coast and the USA.

RU will be screening at the Mission Cultural Center For Latino Arts as part of the 13th Annual Mission Creek Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco, California. The screening of the film will follow a performance from San Francisco's own Loco Bloco and will be followed by a panel discussion on conducting youth arts programs with limited financial resources. Exit Art gallery July 24th :: New York City
RU will be screening at the Exit Art gallery in New York as a part of their NÉGRITUDE multi-disciplinary exhibition. NÉGRITUDE explores the visionary 20th century political and artistic movement of the same name — coined by the Martinican poet, playwright, and politician Aimé Césaire in the 1930s — which flourished among Black intellectuals in post-World War I Paris and later spread to Africa, the United States and the Caribbean. Kati Greaney July 25th :: Big Sur, California :: 4pm
On the same day we're screening RU in San Fran, it'll be playing at The Big Sur Spirit Garden in conjunction with the "Rhythms of Bahia" Photography Exhibit. The featured photographers are Kati Greaney and the photography students she took under her wing at Bejé Eró. Bejé Eró is one of the groups featured in our film and one that we've tried to assist during these years through video and photography workshops and equipment donations.
